Crisis Contact Numbers:

Suicide Prevention Lifeline: offers phone, chat, and TTY; also has a veteran-specific hotline.

The Trevor Project: offers phone, chat, and text.

Trans Life Line: offers phone only.

Crisis Text Line: offers text.

Samaritans: offers email correspondence - serves more than those who are suicidal - also for those who are struggling, upset, need to vent, etc.


Federal / Multi-state resources:

The US Department of State official guide to gender change and passports: The most authoritative source on passports (since they are the ones who issue them) with answers to many questions. They seem to still be updating it with additional answers. Has a pretty comprehensive FAQ at the bottom.

The National Center for Transgender Equality: They have a very comprehensive, state to state guide on the steps needed to change various types of ID (and a federal guide for passports) that can help answer a lot of questions.

Susan's Place Wiki on name changes by state: Includes at least some info for every state and Washington DC. Some states have very in-depth write-ups and others have less. Many states have at least the price of the filing fee listed.

Transgender American Veterans Association: They have a map feature to help find local organizations who can provide help to trans people (some are specifically focused on veterans) here. If you are a veteran, they also have useful info regarding the VHA's commitments to LGBT people here.

GLAD toolkits: Mostly useful to those in New England, this site contains links to several step-by-step guides for ID changes, and other info valuable to the trans community.

Southern Equality: This guide provides information regarding a number of different methods for funding transition, including information about many scholarship funds

Alabama

Name Change form for Alabama Court System: A PDF of the form to change your name in Alabama, provided by the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts.

LGBT Rights Toolkit Trans in the South - Alabama: offers complete information about court name changes, and name and gender changes on driver's licenses and birth certificates. It also contains general useful trans-specific information for Alabama.


Alaska

Alaska Court System Change of Name: The official website for the state of Alaska's court system with the necessary forms for a name change.

Trans Equality ID Documents Center: Alaska provides information about changing name and gender marker.


Arizona

AZ Judicial Branch Official Name Change Page: Contains links to official forms and info for those looking to change their name in AZ.


Arkansas

Arkansas Transgender Equality Coalition: A pdf which gives a detailed step-by-step to changing names within Arkansas. Very detailed and informative.

California

Transgender Law Center: A pdf which gives a detailed step-by-step to changing names within California. Very comprehensive, but includes resources to ask for help if it’s too overwhelming.


Colorado

The Colorado Name Change Project: Gives a very readable overview of exactly what is needed to change your name and marker within Colorado, as well as including links to a packet that contains the required forms pre-filled out.


Connecticut

Connecticut TransAdvocacy Coalition: A detailed guide for what is required to change your name and gender within Connecticut, as well as including links the individual forms.


Delaware

Change of Name Petitions via Delaware Courts: Delaware has gone to the trouble of setting up packets for changing your name in each of its three counties with step-by-step instructions and forms included.


District of Columbia

Name and Gender Change Guide for DC Residents: A step-by-step guide to updating name and gender for those living in DC. Covers ID updates but also other things such as updating your info with insurance carriers, etc. Very comprehensive - updated July 2014.

Trans Law DC's Guide to Name and Gender Change in DC: A less comprehensive, but possibly easier to follow, guide made by the same group that co-sponsored the above guide.


Georgia

Trans Equality ID Documents Center: Georgia provides information about changing name and gender marker on driver’s licenses.

LGBT Rights Toolkit Trans in the South: Georgia offers complete information about court name changes, and name and gender changes on birth certificates. It also contains general useful trans-specific information for Georgia.


Florida

National Center for Lesbian Rights: A pdf with a very long and detailed guide for what is required to change your name and gender within Florida.


Hawaii

Hawaii Lieutenant Governor's Site on Name Changes: The official site for name change info in Hawaii. Contains all the relevant forms and a link to an online application you can use, instead. They even have an instructional video on using it.


Idaho

Idaho Legal Aid's Name Change Guide: Includes a step by step guide as well as an online tool that walks you through the process of filling out the necessary forms. Requires Adobe Flash.

Trans Equality ID Documents Center: Idaho provides information about changing name and gender marker. Idaho does not allow changes to birth certificate gender markers.


Illinois

Equality Illinois: A pdf with a very long and detailed guide for what is required to change your name and gender within Illinois. Also includes the forms you will need to fill out, FAQs, and obligations.


Indiana

Indiana Transgender Network: A step by step guide for changing your name and gender markers within Indiana. Also includes links to FAQs and the forms you will need to fill out.

Official Site of the Indiana Judiciary: This is the official page of the Indiana Judiciary with regards to name changes in Indiana. It includes a PDF you can save and edit / print with the relevant form.


Iowa

Iowa Guide to Changing Legal Identity Documents: Prepared by an LGBT health clinic at the University of Iowa. Dated April, 2014.


Kansas

Kansas Legal Services Name Change Guide: Contains a link to a pdf with a step-by-step guide to changing your name. Also includes a link to an interactive questionaire to help prepare paperwork, which requires Adobe Flash.

Trans Equality ID Documents Center: Kansas provides information about changing name and gender marker

Transas City: provides a personal review from 2013 of the process for name and gender marker changes in Kansas. Both of these resources note that currently, Kansas birth certificate gender markers cannot be changed

Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund: This is a series of pro-bono lawyers for trans name changes, does not provide instructions on how to change names but offers to take care of the process for applicants. You can see a summary of their offer here.

Vermont Judiciary's Name Change Page: The official site for name changes in the state of Vermont, including the necessary forms. Very straightforward, and easy to find info about the filing fee ($150) in their short FAQ.


Virginia

Wisconsin

Wisconsin Court System’s Self-Help Center for Name Changes: The official guide to changing your name in Wisconsin. They have a step-by-step PDF with a checklist for WI residents to follow.
